Minnehaha Falls: The Most Beautiful Short Ride in Minneapolis
Start at one of Minneapolis's most iconic landmarks and ride a creek trail through wooded bottoms to a quiet lake. The Minnehaha Falls & Creek Trail is only about 6 miles, but it packs in a 53-foot waterfall, shaded creek riding, and a lakefront finish. It's the perfect ride when you want nature without leaving the city.
The Route
Begin at Minnehaha Falls in the Longfellow neighborhood. Take in the falls — especially stunning in spring melt or after rain — then follow the Minnehaha Creek trail west. The trail winds under bridges and past small rapids through a surprisingly wild creek corridor, eventually arriving at Lake Nokomis. Loop the lake or turn back for a relaxed out-and-back.
Highlights
- Minnehaha Falls — the 53-foot cascade immortalized in Longfellow's poetry
- Creek-side riding — shaded, wooded, and quieter than the lakes
- Lake Nokomis — a sandy beach and flat loop to finish
- Minnehaha Parkway — connects onward to the Chain of Lakes
When to Go
Spring brings the most dramatic falls flow. Summer is lush and shaded. Fall colors along the creek are spectacular. The trail is paved and family-friendly throughout.
