Why the Midtown Greenway Is Minneapolis's Best Commute
If you've ever sat in rush-hour traffic on I-35W, you already know why the Midtown Greenway is a revelation. This 5.5-mile paved trail runs below grade through the heart of south Minneapolis, fully separated from cars, and connects the Chain of Lakes to the Mississippi River. It's the fastest, safest, and most enjoyable way to cross the city by bike.
The Route
The Greenway starts near West Lake Calhoun (Bde Maka Ska) and runs east through Uptown, Lyn-Lake, and the Seward neighborhood before meeting the Mississippi River Trail near downtown. You pass under major intersections via tunnels and over highways on dedicated bridges — zero traffic stops the whole way.
What Makes It Special
- Fully grade-separated from street traffic
- Lit at night, making it great for winter and early-morning commuters
- Smooth, wide pavement suitable for road bikes and kids' trailers alike
- Direct connection to the Chain of Lakes and the river trail
Tips for First-Timers
Stick to the right, pass on the left with a bell or call-out, and remember that the Greenway gets busy after work hours — the commute home is half the fun. In winter, the city clears snow from the Greenway before many side streets, so it stays rideable long after a storm.
